Joshua 21:43-45 ; Psalm 47 ; 1 Corinthians 10
Scripture - "We must never try to get Christ to serve us instead of us serving him;" 1 Corinthians 10:8-10
Observation - That is an interesting quote in light of Jesus words that he "came not be served, but to serve and give his life a ransom for many." But some of what he means there is that he did not come demanding to be served as most people in positions of authority did. And it is due to the very fact that he so focused on serving us - by giving his very life - that we now, in gratitude, ought to serve him. Christ has already provided the ultimate service to us - providing for our salvation - what more can we ask of him.
Application - This certainly has implications for our prayer life. Often our prayers are just that - asking God to serve us. "In Jesus' name bless this, do that, provide something else..." We often give God our "to do" list in prayer, and check in later to see how's he doing. Perhaps our focus could be a little more on, first, thanksgiving, and second, asking God what his "to do" list for us is. Then we can focus more on serving Christ.
Prayer - Dear God, thank you for everything. For the days that going smoothly and for the days that challenge me, but yet help me to grow stronger and to rely more on you than me. What is it that you would have me do for you? Help me not only to hear, but to faithfully respond. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
